At an Annual General Meeting of the Old Community Council of Umtali (Mutare), it was decided that the first Greek Orthodox Church in the then Rhodesia would be built. The Committee responsible for the building of the Church were Nik. Orfanidis (President), Pano Lekatsa (Vice President), Elias Leropoulos (Secretary), Philip Markidis (Treasurer) and Committee Member, P. Katsikas.
The foundation stone of the Church was laid on 15th August, 1931 by the Town's Administrator, the Honorable W.A. BROOKS with Mitropoliti Isidoros of Johannesburg.
The Church was finished in a year and was dedicated to the "Koimisis tis Theotokou (Dormition of our Lady).
