Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada)

Dean, the Rev. Father George Saganis

History
The foundation Stone of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Harare, dedicated to the "Holy Trinity" was laid by the Late Lord Llewellin, First Governor General of the then Federation of Rhodesia and Nysasalnad on the lst day of April, 1954.

The building , which is of the Neo -Byzantine style, was completed by the end of December, 1955.

The  pre-cast screen which runs the full width of the building separates the Altar from the Sanctuary and is covered with Ikons of Saints and Prophets which were donated by members of the Orthodox Congregation.

The Balcony, which is called the "Gyneconete", represents the area allocated in olden days to the women who were not allowed in the body of the Church. To-day it houses the Choir in its centre portion, while the two wings of the balcony are available to those attending the services.

Amongst the chief features of this Cathedral are the chandeliers made in England and used for internal lighting. There are seven large ones installed int he shape of a Cross and symbolizing the Seven Sacraments. The main chadelier hanging  from the centre of the Dome symbolizes our Lord as the Head of Christianity and the twelve cnadles on its surrounding corona symbolize the twelve Apostles. The coronas of those seven hndeliers bear the colour Red (symbolizing the blodd of the Martyrs), Green (symbolizing the regeneration) and Mauve (the Church's mourning for the sufferings and death of our Lord).

Service of the Consecration of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the "Holy Trinity" by his Grace Nicodemus Zaharoulis Gree, Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop of Souther Africa at the then Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia on Sunday, the 24th of November, 1957.

Interesting to note that the officiant of that service was the Very Rev. Archimandrite Kyrillos Papadopoulos, M.DIV., Dean of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Johannesburg. In 1969 he was elected the Mitropolitan of the Holy Diocese of the then Rhodesia.
